The story is very good and well developed. It is a surprising story plot full of suspense and brutality. It starts off dark, but at the end the story becomes very hopeful for the people. I am looking forward to hear the next part in the trilogy.

Just finished listening to "Doctor Who #196 - Equilibrium" released by Big Finish Productions.
Spoiler Alert - Move on and don't if you haven't listened to this audio adventure or previous ones.
"Equilibrium" is the second adventure in the new E-Space trilogy; and it's quite the disturbing, thought provoking tale of environmental extremism taken to its ultimate conclusion of environmental balance.
With the TARDIS disabled by the theft of a component necessary for it to navigate safely in the Vortex,; the Fifth Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan, and Turlough follow the trail left by the thief and crash land on the frozen planet of Isenfel - where survival and life extracts a high price. Changing the system this time may not be so easy for the Doctor when he discovers that Isenfel is really a complex experiment designed to halt the decay of E-Space. For if the Doctors and his companions interfere this time, they will condemn an entire universe to decay and collapse.
Taunt Adventure!
Five Stars!
Fifth Doctor audio drama sequel to The Lady of Mercia, set between the TV episodes Enlightenment and The King's Demons.

The TARDIS is still stuck in E-Space and the search for a way out continues. The planet Isenfell might hold the key, if the Doctor and his companions can survive its many dangers perpetual ice, fierce beasts, black snow, the harsh customs of the locals - and an ancient secret that's best left undisturbed ...

There's a lot of drama and action here within an intriguing setting and a well structured plot. The regular cast shine and all, with the exception of Nyssa, contribute to the action. The guest cast play a strong role in the story and are well acted, though Joanna Kirkland (Princess Inger) is a little too stagey for my liking. The bleakness of the setting is effectively conveyed and plays a significant role in the story. I didn't like the denouement, for reasons I will explain below, but you may think it's just fine. A little more attention to detail would have been appreciated; for example, Queen Karlina is addressed in a variety of ways that each convey a different idea of relative status, and these things really matter when trying to build up a picture of a feudal society for the listener.

The Doctor manages to screw things up for the locals by tinkering with the parameters of Isenfell without knowing what it is and why it was built. Genius! Yes, he often makes hasty decisions but this seems too cavalier, even for him. Then everyone gets angsty and guilty about what they didn't know and couldn't have done anything about even if they had known. The TARDIS is recovered quite easily in the end through sheer technobabble. And then it turns out that in a short time, none of this is going to matter anyway, which is a real downer to end on. I prefer my drama to come without the gratuitous death of billions ...
The second part of the new E-space trilogy from the Doctor, Nyssa, Tegan, and Turlough landing an Isenfel, a Wintery Fairy Tale Kingdom. They're welcomed as guests of honor, but horrified when they find four servants are going to be executed to restore equilibrium. "Isenfel must be constant!"

There's so much to love about this story. Writer Matt Fitton tried to capture the tone of the original E-space series. I think he more captured the type of plots that were used in that series but provided a bit more constant. The story really doesn't have a villain. The Doctor is horrified as he learns about how the society is ruthless in the way it maintains its balance, but there's no one who wanted this system or even offers anything other than a half-hearted necessity defense.

Fitton does a great job caring for the Companions and giving them something to do. It's not all great, but none of it's boring either. He deserves special praise for coming up with a plot for Turlough with romantic undertones involving the princess. I also thought, there was a very nice moment between the Doctor and Nyssa towards the end of the story, with her showing comforting support. There's also some growing tension between them that's built up nicely here.

The sound design and music merit serious praise. Much of the first episode is set at a party at the palace, and the sound design brings the place to life, with the music being divine.

Overall, this was a fine showing all around and representative of the type of product you expect from Big Finish.
The story is very good and well developed. It is a surprising story plot full of suspense and brutality. It starts off dark, but at the end the story becomes very hopeful for the people. I am looking forward to hear the next part in the trilogy.
